Our trip to Alabama

We went to an affair in Birmingham which turned out to be a fund raiser for the hosting chapter.

They were a young chapter and by that I mean they were all PinkHatters. We had lots of fun on the trip over and back!

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me
and I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other peoples' gardens and learn to spit.

...... maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised when suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Jenny Joseph was born in 1932 in Birmingham, England and was first published by John Lehmann in the 1950s. Joseph has published numerous collections of poetry and fiction. In 1996 Jenny Joseph was honored in a national poll as the author of the U.K.'s "most popular post-war poem", "Warning", which begins: "When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple." Written in 1961, it was included in "Rose In the Afternoon" (J M Dent, 1974). It then appeared in Philip Larkin's "Oxford Book of 20th Century English Verse". Jenny Joseph lives in Gloucestershire, England.

If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish, and my paint job is getting a little dull ... But that's not the worst of it.My headlights are out of focus, and it's especially hard to see things up close.My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things, even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins.It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently.But here's the worst of it --"Almost every time I sneeze, cough or laugh.... either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!
